- INTRODUCTION
-
- SOLITAIRE is a card game that uses your PC display monitor as a
- tabletop on which to play it. It plays by the rules of KLONDIKE
- which uses one 52 card deck and the classic 7 card pile layout. It
- will keep a running total of the points earned as you play the game.
- SOLITAIRE uses an EGA or VGA graphics adapter and color monitor to
- display the cards in full graphics game quality detail (640 by 350
- pixels). It uses the mouse to deal cards from the deck and to place
- them on the different piles. A Game button provides access to a
- pull-down menu that allows you to deal a new game or change how many
- cards will be dealt off the deck at a time. The score display can be
- turned on or off from this menu as well.
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
- SOLITAIRE requires an EGA or VGA color video system and a Mirocsoft
- or compatible mouse. Operating system requirement is PC DOS or MS
- DOS version 2.10 or greater. To run SOLITAIRE you will need 482,352
- bytes or more of free (available for running a program) memory.
-
- INSTALLATION
-
- None required.
-
- SOLITAIRE can be placed on a hard disk by using the DOS COPY command.
- The only file you need to copy is SOLITAIR.EXE. See your DOS manual
- for more information on how to use the COPY command.
-
-
- RUNNING SOLITAIRE
-
- To start the game, place the diskette that contains the file
- SOLITAIR.EXE in drive A and type A:SOLITAIR (at the DOS prompt). The
- opening menu displays the copyright and the Shareware registration
- notice. To begin play, click on the circle that contains the word
- GO. You should then see the cards dealt out on the playing table. If
- the program returns to the DOS prompt, check to see if your computer
- system meets the all the requirements specified in the SYSTEM
- REQUIREMENTS section of this document.
-
- If you wish to avoid seeing this opening menu, type SOLITAIR -n when
- you first start the game. for example type A:SOLITAIR -n at the DOS
- prompt.
-
-
- THE SCREEN GRAPHICS LAYOUT
-
- Your computer display screen is placed in the graphics mode and is
- divided into 2 sections. The very top section of the screen is long
- and narrow and contains the Game and Score buttons. The other section
- is the tabletop which contains the card piles and the card deck.

-
-
-
-
- These piles are laid out in the classic Klondike 7 pile fashion. The
- mouse cursor is a left pointing arrow and is use for pointing to the
- cards and buttons. Initially, this cursor will appear in the upper
- left corner of the screen.
-
- USING THE MOUSE
-
- The mouse provides the following two functions.
-
- 1. To move the arrow to point to the desired card or button.
- 2. To perform an action on an object (such as moving one or
- more cards or to press a button) that the arrow is
- pointing at.
-
- The arrow is moved by simply moving the mouse. It moves in the same
- direction as the mouse.
-
- To perform an action on an object that the arrow is pointing at,
- press and release the left mouse button. This action is know as
- Clicking. Another form of a mouse action is Dragging. To Drag an
- object that is pointed by the arrow, PRESS and HOLD the left button
- while moving the mouse. The object will move in the same direction
- as the mouse. Once the object is in the desired place, release the
- left mouse button to end the Dragging action.
-
- PLAYING THE GAME
-
- To deal cards from the deck, place the tip of the arrow anywhere on
- the top card and Click using the left mouse button. This action will
- result in 1 or 3 cards being removed from the deck and placed face up
- in a pile just right of the deck. Three cards are normally drawn off
- the deck unless this has been changed by using the options menu. When
- all of the cards are dealt out, click anywhere inside the black-
- ringed oval to reset the deck for another round of dealing.
-
- To play a card that is face up, you have your choice of Clicking on
- or Dragging it. If you Click on it, the card will be moved to the
- first pile that contains a legal move if one exists. The search for a
- legal move starts with the left most of the top four piles and moves
- to the right until the first legal move is found or all piles have
- been checked and no legal move exists. If you move the card by
- Dragging it, only the outline of the card moves. If any part of the
- card outline touches any part of the card pile that is a legal move,
- then the card will move to correct position on that pile when you
- release the left mouse button. When you Click on a card and there is
- more than one legal move and the move the game picked is not the one
- you wanted, then you must Drag the card to move it to the place you
- prefer.
-
- To turn over a top card that is face down on a card pile, Click on
- that card.

-
-
-
-
- To move 2 or more cards from one pile to another, you must point to
- the top part of the card that is showing and Drag it over to the top
- card in the pile that you want to place them on. When you drag more
- than one card at a time, the outline that moves with the mouse will
- be the size of the pile of cards your are moving.
-
- SCORING POINTS
-
- A running total of the points scored is displayed on the Score
- button. You earn 5 points every time one the following moves occur.
-
- 1. When a card that was dealt from the deck is placed on one of the
- 7 card piles in the lower half of the screen.
-
- 2. When a top card that is face down in one of the 7
- card piles is turned face up.
-
- You earn 10 points whenever a card is moved to one of the 4
- Sequenced-by-Suit piles.
-
- You lose 5 points when you move a card from one of the 4 Sequenced-
- by-Suit piles to one of the lower 7 piles.

- least one card during that pass.
